Questions

What people ask before they try it.

Short answers, from what the product does today. If yours is not here, write to us.

What is Glot?
Glot lets people who speak different languages have a spoken conversation. Each person speaks their own language; Glot shows what was said in the other person's language and speaks it. It works on one shared phone, across several phones in the same room, and as a video meeting between people in different places.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Glot is a web app. Open it in the browser on a phone or a laptop, sign in, and start. There is nothing to download.
Does the other person need an account?
No. Only the person who starts a conversation signs in. Everyone else joins by scanning a code or following a link, with nothing to make and nothing to install.
How much does it cost?
Nothing while Glot is in beta. Every account gets 120 translation minutes a day, for every way to use it. A conversation costs its length however many people are in it. If you need more, write to us and say what you are doing.
What is the difference between Talk, Duo and Meet?
Talk is one phone between two people in the same place. Duo is the same conversation read on several phones in the same room, each in its owner's language. Meet is a video meeting between people in different places, with the conversation in each person's language beside the faces.
Does Glot speak the translation out loud?
On a shared phone and in a meeting, yes: the translation is spoken as the words arrive, and a small waveform under the message follows the voice. When several phones are side by side in one room, they show text only, so that one phone's voice is not picked up and translated again by the next.
Which languages does Glot support?
Every conversation holds two languages, chosen when it starts. The list of languages is in the app, where you choose the pair, and it grows over time. Glot is in beta, so some languages, accents and noisy places will work better than others.
Can I see what Glot heard me say?
Yes. Each message shows the translation large, for the person reading it, and the words as spoken small beneath once they are confirmed, so the speaker can check what was heard and put it right.
Does it work on a laptop?
Yes. Talk is at home on a phone, which goes between two people; Meet is at home on a laptop, with the faces on camera. Both work on either.
Can I use Glot for medical, legal or other critical conversations?
Glot is in beta and is machine translation. It is not a substitute for a professional interpreter where one is required, and you should not rely on it alone where a mistake could cause harm.
What happens to what we say?
Speech is processed to translate it as you talk. How conversation content and personal data are handled, kept and protected is set out in full in our Privacy Policy.
How do I get in touch?
Write to contact@glot.com. While Glot is in beta we read everything, and what people tell us shapes what we build next.
